Lowell High School, Lowell
High School, may we ever
stand, honest, faithful and
courageous, loyal to our land.
Lowell High School, Lowell
High School, we shall all be
true to the ideals you teach us
through and through.

4

1

During our four years at
Lowell High School, many
changes have occured. To the
Annex, Cobum Hall, and the
1922 building, the new
buildings were added. The
crowded tunnel, carpeted
classrooms and constantly
active gym and swimming
pool have added a great deal
of enthusiasm and motivation
to the student body.

J

When we began our freshman
year no one could get a peep
out of us at pep rallies, unlike
our senior year when no one
could keep us quiet. Over the
years as our school rose from
an idea to a reality, our spirits
rose to great heights.

Junior year the entire school
united with spirit and pride to
retain our traditional name,
“Red Raiders." Our victory
helped our spirits continue to
soar.

In Memoriam
Peter McCall
1964-1980

With love, from the
Class of 1982

"All Good Things Must Come To An End

As I look around, all the people I see.

Are those who suffered through this tragedy.

All those tears that they had cried,

A part of them was going to die.

Innocent, spirited, young, and free
You fought for your life so desperately.

Lying there, helpless in your bed.

Hearing our voices but nothing you said.

We prayed you'd hear us and respond
But a week went by and you were gone.

Peter, although you're not with us today.

The memories of you will not slip away.

You left a mark on all your friends:

"All good things must come to an end".

Ellen Busby

the Culinary Arts Department
prepared food for many
activities. Among those were
an Hors d'Oeuvre reception
for 500 guests to benefit
scholarships, a buffet for 450
adult education graduates, and
the 55th reunion dinner for the
class of 1927.

The second year of the
International Language Club
was a memorable one. With
coordinator Helen Flanagan
and the following officers:
Pres. Amy Woo, Vice-Pres.
Gail Reynolds, Sec. Angelica
Jeffreys and Treas. Becky Woo,
each chapter hosted an
informative and entertaining

meeting.

The Spanish Chapter, directed
by Mrs. Priscilla Donlon,
featured songs, dances, a
movie of a real bullfight, and
Spanish food — tacos and

tortilas.

The Latin Chapter, directed by
Mr. Donald Bailey, offered
readings about Julius Caesar,
interpretation of the play "Pot
of Gold", and a buffet of
vegetables, fruits and cakes.

native costumes and served
Greek delicacies for
refreshments.

The French Chapter's meeting
started with a short French
vocabulary lesson by Mr.
Ronald Boisjoly, director, to
acquaint everyone with the
terms used by Chef John
Drummey who demonstrated
the preparation of French
crepes which all enjoyed
eating. An Eiffel Tower and
gargoyles made from paper
and wire plus cascades of
paper flowers were the
unusual decorations.

The Portuguese Chapter,
directed by Mr. Luis Gomez,
showed slides of Portugal.
These slides with background
music were presented by Fr.
Silva. The Portuguese flag
comprised the chief element of
decoration. Following an
explanation of the colors —
red, green, and yellow —
given by students, each person
received a small flag. All
enjoyed native food — some
prepared in Lowell and some
imported from Portugal. An
unusual punch was served
called maracuga, peculiar to
Brazil.

It was another superb year for
the Junior Classical League
here at Lowell High. Under
the guidance of Mrs. Grace
Scanlan and the direction of
President Lisa Langlois,
Vice-President Victoria Zaim,
Secretary Beth Sager, and
Treasurer Barbara McLaughlin,
the chapter of 125 members
participated in such events as
the Roman Banquet, Classics
Day, the National Convention,
and the National Latin Exam.

This marked the fourth year in
a row that LHS has been
represented on a state level in
this national organization of
35,000 Latin students. Kathy
Wrobel had both the honor
and responsibility of serving
on the Executive Board as
Treasurer of Massachusetts for

1981-82.

During the 1981-82 school
year, the LHS Band
participated in many school
events such as pep rallies,
football games, the National
Honor Society Induction and
graduation. Senior Renee
Giroux and junior Patricia
Annis, were chosen to be
members of the District Band,
a highly competitive band in
which only the best musicians
can participate. The LHS Band
practiced all year for its annual
concert in March. In the
Liberty Day Parade, the band
placed second in its division.
At the FLHS band banquet,
senior Renee Giroux was
awarded the band's highest
award, the Arian.

Majorettes

The LHS Baton Twirling Squad
worked hard to create a new
image. Improved fashion,
rhythm, and movement aided
to the formation of a potential
top notch unit. The
enthusiasm among members
was enjoyed and appreciated
by all. The squad performed at
football halftimes, pep rallies,
and represented the city of
Lowell in several parades.

Special thanks and
congratulations to Evelyn
Alicea for her strong
management and achievement
as the LHS Baton Twirling
Captain. The co-captain of the
1981-82 squad was Patricia
Gregoire. We thank her for a
job well done.

Choral Arts

The Choral Arts Department
under the direction of B.
Douglas Townshend had a
non-stop year. Starting with
the Harmonies of Halloween
Variety Show, the chorus went
directly into the hectic
Christmas season, the Lowell
Historical play, "If the Falls
Could Speak", the musical
"Carousel" and finally ended
with graduation. Extra events
were three concerts at the
Courthouse for naturalization
ceremonies. Northeast district
chorus tryouts, the Citywide
Chorus, Rollerskating Parties
and several fundraisers along
the way. "Dr. Dubby" sure

Football

Directed by Coach Walter
Nelson the 1981 Red Raider
football squad boasted an
impressive six win four loss
season. The Raiders captured a
third place spot in the
Merrimack Valley West
Division. Starting only seven
seniors, the Red and Gray won
three of their first four games
and went on to make a bid for
the MVC West Crown. But
costly injuries at wrong times
and losses to Tewksbury and
Methuen forced Lowell to take
a third place.

Highlighting the season for the
relatively young Raider Squad
was the outstanding victory

over highly favored Andover.
Lowell held off a potent
offensive attack in the final
minutes with the help of
seniors Fran Funaro, Jay
Jackson, Tim Grover, and
Steve Camacho, all playing
outstandingly.

Another outstanding game
was the routing of Dracut in
which the L.H.S. offensive
attack was lead by Charlie
Greenhouse who had three
touchdowns and senior
co-captain Fran Funaro who
starred on both the offensive
and defensive line.

123

At halftime. Homecoming
Queen Asha Andrejasko was
crowned. Her court consisted
of junior Maria Selvaggio;
sophomore Cheryl Hamilton,
and freshman Joni McMahon.

Captain Tim Brown received
the award for outstanding
defensive player of the game.

The L.H.S. spirit was shining
brightly throughout the
season, both on and off the
field. Win or lose the Red
Raider pride was always there
. . . and always will be.

The Homecoming Game
against Greater Lowell Voke
was another victory for L.H.S.

A battle of the offensive and
defensive lines led the Raiders
to a 14-0 victory.

Thanksgiving activities began
with the traditional Pep Rally
which was the first of many to
be held in the new fieldhouse.
Students gathered in the new
gym. The Varsity and Junior
Varisty Cheerleaders
performed along with the
Band and Majorettes. Coach
Nelson introduced the team
and spoke of their successful

Thanksgiving

season.

However, the traditional
Thanksgiving day clash held at
Lowell's Cawley Stadium
proved to be a disappointing
event for the Red & Gray. The
game, played on a mud-slicked
field, put Lawrence in favor of
the young L.H.S. squad from

Girls' Swimming

The LHS Girls' Swim Team
had a very successful first
season compiling a record of
3-1. The credit must be given
to Coach Roseanne Riddick
who volunteered a great deal
of time to the team and to the
team itself who worked hard
both in and out of the water.

The team christened the new
LHS pool with a victory over
Westford Academy but the
climax of the season was the
come from behind win over
highly acclaimed Notre Dame.
Lowell had to place 1st and
2nd in the last relay of the
meet. This seemed impossible
but Coach Riddick's stategy

payed off and the team won
by one point.

Jean Mitchell, Cathi Cote, Gail
Reynolds, Lisa Kunzler, Tara
Donahue, and Sarah Burns
represented Lowell High at the
Sectionals in Medford. Senior
captain, Jean Mitchell was an
excellent diver as well as
swimmer. She swam the fly as
well as the relay and, received
the Coaches' Award.
Freshman Cathi Cote, a good
all around swimmer, received
the MVP Award. Junior Tara

competitor received the Most

Boys' Basketball

The 1982 Boys' Basketball
Team started, off on a sour
note, losing their first two
games and being 1-2 when the
Greater Lowell Christmas

wins to post a 10-3 record
looking ahead to Andover. It
was a tremendous game but
Andover edged Lowell by two.
In the MVC playoffs Lowell

more win would have qualified
them for the Eastern Mass.

Wrestling

1981-82 was another
blockbuster season in the
history of Lowell High
Wrestling. Coach George Bossi
drove his state champions to a
16-1 record, losing only to
undefeated Norwood in a
tough 32-27 match. Led by
co-captains Steve Beati and
John Brouillette, the Raiders
took second in the Lowell
Holiday Tournament, first in
the MVC Dual Meet
Championship, and first in the
Division I North Sectionals. Of
the five wrestlers sent to the
Massachusetts Wrestling
Federation Championship in

Worcester, Beati and
Brouillette earned first place
laurels while Lowell Holiday
champ Warren McQuaide took
home a second place.

The highlight of the season
was the destruction of Division
II King, North Andover in a
decisive dual meet. With a
38-16 route, Lowell's Raiders
broke the 106 match winning
streak of the knights Knights.

Throughout the year, the team
looked to a number of faces,
both old and new, for
inspiration. Senior George

Gilbride provided a fine
example of dedication and
spirit that helped spark the
team to victory. Seniors Steve
Geary, Bill Pearsall, Ed
Cornish, and Pat McCanpi all
helped Lowell finish another
accomplished year. Juniors
Tom Mayrand and Pat Ryan
turned in excellent

The Lowell High Girls'
Gymnastic Team compiled a
record of seven wins and three
losses and placed third in the
Merrimack Valley Conference

League.

Both senior Co-Captains,
Donna Kacavas and Jean
Mitchell, along with a strong
supporting cast of talented
gymnasts, formed the nucleus
of what was to become a well
balanced team.

Donna Kacavas, Lowell's top
all-around performer was
named to the MVC First Team
All-Stars, and received the
LHS Most Valuable Player

Award.

Gymnastics

Donna's strength was her
acrobatic ability. Her cartwheel
mount and one-arm
backhandsprings, always done
to perfection, made her one of
the strongest tumblers in the

MVC.

Hockey

The 1981-82 hockey season
was filled with excitement. The
team finished with an 11-6-2
record, just 3 points shy of a
state tourney bid. The team
was led by the high scoring
trio of Mike Rawnsley, John
Farrington, and Robbie
Paquette. Senior forwards who
also contributed to the Raiders'
success were Shaun Cremin,
John Downes, and Jim
Picanso. The squad was
anchored on defense by senior
rear guards Charlie Carkin, Joe
Weissbach, and Tom Callahan.
Minding the nets were Mark
Furtado and Ken Silva.

Rawnsley's career point total
of 156 and Carkin' s of 51,
established new scoring
records for LHS forwards and
defensemen respectively. They
are just 2 of the numerous
graduates going on to play
college hockey. They as well as
Farrington and Paquette were
chosen for the MVC All-Star

Team.

Softball

Coaches Susan Callahan and Ric
O'Brien guided the LHS Girls'
Softball team to its finest season in
the sport's brief existence. Lowell
High came into the 1982 campaign
with the stiff task of defending its
MVC Championship Title and
emerged with a very impressive
13-1 record in the process. LHS
avenged their only loss by
defeating Andover 9-0.

This year, LHS not only qualified
for post season tournament play,
but entered as the number one
seed. However, all hopes of
gaining that last championship

were crushed when LHS lost a
marathon 13 inning contest to
underdog Danvers in the
quarterfinal round of action.

One of the most outstanding
players of this years squad was ace
hurler, Tammy Therrien, alias
Nolan Ryan. Tammy, pitching
every inning of every game,
finished her awesome season with
a record matched by her team,
13-1. Tammy threw to an
incredible career mark of 46 wins,
5 losses, and 347 strike outs. She
was a four times Lowell Sun
All-Star, two time Player of the
Year, two time MVC All-Star, THS
MVP for the past three years, and
this year was named to the elite
Boston Globe All-Star squad.

1982 was an up and down year
for the Boys' Tennis Team. It
began rather slowly at a pace
of one win and five losses and
proceeded to a fast finish with
a final record of nine wins and
seven losses.

The doubles team of Ben Woo
and Gene Welch worked very
efficiently to bring Lowell to a
winning season. In singles the
play of Gerald Chertavian was
superior. Other standouts
included Jim O'Brien, Bob
Panessiti, Jim Flynn, Bob
Violette, Joe Lemay, Norm
Robillard, and Peter Kokas.

All in all, 1982 was a very
successful and satisfying
season for both the players
and Coach Shadan.

Class Ode
"Here We Are,
Watch Us Go"

Words by Vivian Ste. Marie Music by Jill Parrino

Here we are, watch us go. We have to face new challenges, spent the
time and the time has passdti, these years will ever last . . .

Here at Lowell High.

All the time we worked so hard, now it's all paid off. Happy times
will spread their wings and new lives will begin.

Looking back, we can see our pride in past accomplishments. The time
we spent with all our friends will make us laugh again, when we are
alone.

Maybe now we'll find ourselves, though it is hard to say. Take things
as they come to you, never let them stray.

Face each day with hope — it just might help to pull you through. Your
friends will support you and soon you'll see your way — then you'll
start to cope.

If your plans don't work out right, don't be discouraged yet. Just
stay calm, you have the strength to put up a good fight.

Here we are, watch us go. We now can face the challenges. The time's
spent and passed us by. These years will ever last. Now we say
goodbye.

AND FINALLY —

SOME WORDS TO REMEMBER

"To Thine Own Self
Be True."

" Whatsoever You Sow

So Also Shall You Reap."

"To Whom Much Is Given

Much Is Expected."

“As You Leave This Famed Institution
And Go Out Into The World,

Do Not Be Surprised If You Find
More Hind Ends of Horses
Than Front Ends."

Please — Lead Your Life In

Study, Work, And Play

Such That Future Graduates Will Say

You Are Definitely In Front

And Not At —

THE END
